Artist’s Statement
My significant influences are the landscapes of The Peak District and rural Ireland, both places where I grew up.
Although each painting has a specific reference, I am passionate about capturing the elusive ephemeral luminosity of the scene - the spirituality of the land. The subject remains mysterious and shrouded in a dream like state, just beyond physical reach, where figuration is obscured and visual patterns become diffused into a blur, yet not altogether unfamiliar.
I use many layers of oil glazes on a canvas scored and marked aggressively to reinforce the the wrath of nature.
With the subject staying elusive I am interested in the viewer being compelled to weave their own personal response, conjured from their own subconscious.
My greatest influences are the works of Whistler, Gerhard Richter, Rothko, Watts, Delaroche, Turner and Klimt.
